A sudden brief loss of consciousness.
Causes of Faint
Stress, anxiety, fright, over exertion, lack of sleep, lack of food, heat, dehydration, lack of ventilation, prolonged standing, hormonal fluctuations.
Symptoms of Faint
Light headedness, dizziness, slight nausea, darkening of vision, and loss of consciousness resulting in a fall or collapse. Usually occurs when standing, but sometimes when sitting.
Tests for Faint
None usually necessary. If repeat attacks occur, other diseases that may cause this condition (eg. low blood sugar, low blood pressure, irregular heart beat, infections, anemia) must be excluded by blood tests and electrocardiographs.
Treatment for Faint
The patient usually recovers quickly once lying, but should only rise slowly and when completely well.
Complications of Faint of its treatment
Injuries incurred during the fall.
Likely Outcome of Faint
The cause is usually obvious, and provided it can be prevented, recurrences are unlikely.
