Occurs when the arch on the inside of the foot is in continuous contact with the ground when the person is standing barefoot on a smooth hard surface. The foot may also be slightly twisted outwards. All infants are flat-footed, as the arch only develops after the age of two. years. |
Causes of Flat Feet In children a flat foot is an inherited or congenital disorder. In adults the causes may be obesity because the foot must carry excess weight, severe foot arthritis, and occupations that requires prolonged standing. |
Symptoms of Flat Feet Most patients have no symptoms or discomfort. |
Tests for Flat Feet Rarely, X-ray of the foot may be necessary. |
Treatment for Flat Feet No treatment other than well fitting shoes is normally required. Wedging of the shoes to tilt the foot outwards, weight reduction, arch supports, foot exercises and physiotherapy are occasionally used.
