Keratitis

Medical Questions » Keratitis
Name: Keratitis
Also known as: Snow Blindness
Inflammation of the cornea, the outer layer of the eye.
Causes of Keratitis
Ultraviolet lights, exposure to reflected sun (snow blindness), cement dust, and irritating chemicals (eg. alkalis) that may splash into the eye. May also be due to a bacterial or fungal infection in contact lens wearers.
Symptoms of Keratitis
Severe burning pain in the eye starting some hours after exposure to bright light, but immediately with direct irritants. The eyes water and are very sensitive to bright light. Any contraction or dilation of the pupil causes pain.
Tests for Keratitis
Examination of the eye under magnification shows damage to cornea.
Treatment for Keratitis
Irrigating the eye to remove any irritant chemicals or substances, instilling drops to paralyse any pupil movement, and an eye patch.
Complications of Keratitis of its treatment
Scarring of the cornea may occur with chemical burns.
Likely Outcome of Keratitis
Recovery within 24 to 48 hours.
