Keratoacanthoma
Medical Questions » Keratoacanthoma
Name: Keratoacanthoma |
Also known as: KA |
Rapidly enlarging skin growths that are often confused with skin cancers. |
Causes of Keratoacanthoma More common in the elderly and on the face, hands and other sun-exposed areas of the body. Rare in dark-skinned races. |
Symptoms of Keratoacanthoma Initially appear as small, scale-covered lumps, but over a couple of months they enlarge rapidly to become red, shiny, firm blisters topped with a plug of hard scaly material that may be 2cm. or more in diameter. Over the next few months, they will slowly disappear, and eventually little or no trace of their presence remains. They take about twice as long to resolve as they take to develop. |
Tests for Keratoacanthoma If there is any doubt at all about the diagnosis a biopsy must be taken. |
Treatment for Keratoacanthoma No treatment is required unless the KA is very disfiguring. Unsightly ones may be removed surgically.
|
Complications of Keratoacanthoma of its treatment None significant. |
Likely Outcome of Keratoacanthoma Except for the temporary disfigurement they cause, they are quite harmless. |
