A severe form of dry eye syndrome (xerophthalmia).
Causes of Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca
Commonly occurs in elderly women whose lacrimal (tear producing) glands fail. Also a complication of autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren syndrome (see separate entries).
Symptoms of Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca
Continued eye irritation and discomfort from a dry eye surface.
Tests for Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca
A thin strip of blotting paper touched to the lower eye surface for a minute remains abnormally dry.
Treatment for Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca
Very regular, and long term use of lubricating drops and ointment in the eye. Inserts that are placed under the lower lid and ooze a lubricant constantly for many hours can also be used.
Complications of Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca of its treatment
Rarely a threat to sight.
Likely Outcome of Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca
No cure, difficult to control, and usually continues lifelong.
