Knee Meniscus Tear

Medical Questions » Knee Meniscus Tear
Name: Knee Meniscus Tear
Also known as:
Damage to one of the two menisci in each knee joint. The menisci are cartilages that run around the top end of the tibia (main lower leg bone) to deepen the socket of the joint and stabilize it.
Causes of Knee Meniscus Tear
Abnormal twisting of the knee.
Symptoms of Knee Meniscus Tear
Pain, swelling, clicking and sometimes locking of the knee joint that is worse with movement. Patients often describe a feeling of instability in the joint.
Tests for Knee Meniscus Tear
Doctors apply various stress tests to the knee in different positions to make the diagnosis.
Treatment for Knee Meniscus Tear
Initially, rest of the knee with strapping and using crutches may allow the knee to recover. A locked knee can be released by manipulation. In persistent or severe cases, particularly if there is locking, an operation (menisectomy) is necessary to remove the torn cartilage. This can usually be done through an arthroscope (small tube that is passed into the knee joint).
Complications of Knee Meniscus Tear of its treatment
The knee may become unstable after a menisectomy, and premature arthritis may develop.
Likely Outcome of Knee Meniscus Tear
Good results from treatment.
