A common condition of children, diagnosed when a child who is standing straight tries to bring the bony bumps (medial malleoli) on the inside of the ankles together. If they are unable to do this because the knees come together first, the diagnosis is confirmed. |
Causes of Knock Knees Usually a developmental and growth problem. In rare cases due to rickets, poorly healed fractures of the leg bones or other very uncommon diseases. |
Symptoms of Knock Knees Awkward way of walking and possible knee and ankle discomfort. |
Tests for Knock Knees Sometimes an X-ray of the knees may be taken. |
Treatment for Knock Knees In the majority of cases the problem corrects itself without any treatment. In severe cases a wedge may be inserted into the inside edge of the shoes to turn the foot slightly outwards. Rarely, if the problem continues into the early teenage years and causes difficulty in walking or abnormal appearance and posture, an operation may be necessary.
