An extremely contagious form of viral hemorrhagic fever (viral infection of the blood) that occurs in Africa. |
Causes of Marburg Virus The virus is spread by monkeys and from person to person in conditions of poor hygiene. Outbreaks have occurred throughout central Africa, and in zoo monkey handlers elsewhere in the world. Cases in which the infection has minimal symptoms have occurred, but these patients may pass the infection on to others. |
Symptoms of Marburg Virus Muscle pains, headache, sore throat, joint pains, diarrhea, vomiting, red eyes and abnormal bleeding. |
Tests for Marburg Virus Blood tests show significant abnormalities. |
Treatment for Marburg Virus No cure or vaccine for prevention, and treatment is restricted to managing the symptoms and nursing care. Patients must be nursed in strict isolation.
