Mastitis

Medical Questions » Mastitis
Name: Mastitis
Also known as: Breast Infection
An infection of the breast tissue, almost invariably in a breastfeeding woman.
Causes of Mastitis
Bacterial invasion of the breast in a lactating mother that usually occurs if one of the many lobes in the breast does not adequately empty its milk. May spread from a sore, cracked nipple. Women nursing for the first time are more frequently affected.
Symptoms of Mastitis
The breast becomes painful, very tender, red and sore. The woman may become feverish, and quite unwell.
Tests for Mastitis
None normally necessary.
Treatment for Mastitis
Antibiotic tablets such as penicillin or a cephalosporin. In recurrent cases, bromocriptine may be used to stop or reduce breast milk production. If an abscess forms, an operation to drain away the accumulated pus is necessary.
Complications of Mastitis of its treatment
An abscess may form in the infected lobe of the breast.
Likely Outcome of Mastitis
Usually settles rapidly with correct treatment, and the woman can continue breast feeding.
