Mouth Ulcer
Medical Questions » Mouth Ulcer
Name: Mouth Ulcer |
Also known as: Aphthous Ulcer |
Ulceration of the moist (mucous) membrane that lines the inside of the mouth. |
Causes of Mouth Ulcer Most common cause is an imbalance between the normal bacteria, viruses and fungi that are present in the mouth. An infection, allergy, being overtired or run-down, or a course of antibiotics may be sufficient to alter this delicate balance and allow one type to overgrow, attack the lining of the mouth, and form an ulcer. Other causes include injuries to the mouth from false teeth, biting on hard food, dental disorders, burns from hot liquids, food allergies, infections of the mouth and numerous less common but sometimes quite serious diseases (eg. leukemia, coeliac disease, tuberculosis). Some women develop them before their periods every month. |
Symptoms of Mouth Ulcer One or more painful ulcers in the mouth that may vary from one or two millimeters in diameter to over a centimeter. |
Tests for Mouth Ulcer If recurrent, tests can be performed to detect any specific cause. |
Treatment for Mouth Ulcer Antiseptic and pain relieving gels, lotions, pastes or mouthwashes. Vitamin B and folic acid supplements may be beneficial. In resistant cases pastes that contain steroids and antibiotics can be prescribed.
|
Complications of Mouth Ulcer of its treatment Cancers in the mouth may first appear as a mouth ulcer, particularly in smokers. |
Likely Outcome of Mouth Ulcer Very good, but recurrences common. |
