Causes of Mucocutaneous Leischmaniasis The protozoan Leishmania Brazilians which is transmitted from person to person by direct contact (eg. kissing) or sand flies. Dogs and rats also carry the protozoan. Occurs only in tropical central and south America. |
Symptoms of Mucocutaneous Leischmaniasis Nodules, warty growths or ulcers on the nose and lips, and ulcers inside the nostrils and mouth. |
Tests for Mucocutaneous Leischmaniasis Scrapings from ulcers show characteristic changes under a microscope. Other specific diagnostic tests available. |
Treatment for Mucocutaneous Leischmaniasis Regular injections of medications to destroy the protozoan necessary for several weeks.

Complications of Mucocutaneous Leischmaniasis of its treatment Death may occur from massive ulceration and facial tissue destruction. May spread to affect throat. Disfiguring scars and facial deformities may be left after healing. Secondary bacterial infection of sores common. |
Likely Outcome of Mucocutaneous Leischmaniasis Sores heal spontaneously in six to 24 months. |
