Nappy Rash
Medical Questions » Nappy Rash
Name: Nappy Rash |
Also known as: |
Baby who develops an angry red area of skin under the nappy. A nappy rash is not a reflection on the mother or a sign of neglect, but a very common problem. |
Causes of Nappy Rash Excess moisture on the skin from wet nappies, pilchers and plastic overpants can cause skin damage, eczema and fungal infections (tinea cruris). Overbathing, soap and detergents left in nappies may also irritate the skin. |
Symptoms of Nappy Rash Red, pealing, irritated skin on the buttocks. If the skin folds are mainly involved, it is probably eczema. If the skin folds are spared and there are red satellite lesions beyond the edge of the rash, it may be fungal. |
Tests for Nappy Rash None normally necessary, but swabs may confirm the presence of a fungus or bacteria. |
Treatment for Nappy Rash Zinc cream, lanolin or petroleum jelly applied to the bottom will protect it against moisture. Fungal infections will settle with antifungal creams, but eczema may require a mild steroid cream.
|
Complications of Nappy Rash of its treatment Uncommonly bacterial infections may occur. |
Likely Outcome of Nappy Rash Good, and even the most resistant cases settle once the child is toilet trained. |
