Causes of Notalgia Paraesthetica The nerves which supply sensation to the upper back emerge from the spinal cord and run a long course through thick muscles in the back before making a right-angled turn and reaching the skin. They are easily damaged
by an injury to the area, shingles or even sunburn. The skin is damaged by rubbing and scratching the affected area. |
Symptoms of Notalgia Paraesthetica Itch and/or changed sensation in the area of skin just below the shoulder blade on either side of the back. There may be no visible change in the skin or there may be a brown pigmentation, patchy loss of skin color or
thickening due to rubbing. |
Tests for Notalgia Paraesthetica Changed sensation tested for by pinprick, cotton wool or heat and cold. |
Treatment for Notalgia Paraesthetica Not always successful. Measures that may be tried include cooling lotions (eg. camphor and menthol), capsaicin cream, local anesthetic creams and amitryptilline tablets at night.
