Causes of Paroxysmal Atrial Tachycardia
Relatively common in women, and may be triggered by hormonal, emotional or other factors.
Symptoms of Paroxysmal Atrial Tachycardia
A sudden rapid beating of the heart. Most attacks last only a few minutes and cause minimal discomfort, but often significant anxiety.
Tests for Paroxysmal Atrial Tachycardia
Diagnosis confirmed by an electrocardiogram (ECG) while an attack is present, but this is normal at other times.
Treatment for Paroxysmal Atrial Tachycardia
If the attacks last for long periods or occur frequently, medication (eg. propranolol, lanoxin, sotalol) can be given to prevent them. Firm massage of the eyeballs, holding the breath and dunking the face in icy water may also stop an attack.
Complications of Paroxysmal Atrial Tachycardia of its treatment
None significant.
Likely Outcome of Paroxysmal Atrial Tachycardia
Not harmful, and most attacks settle spontaneously within a couple of hours. Preventive medication very successful.
