A generalized infection that involves muscles. Very rare in developed countries, but widespread in many poorer countries.
Causes of Polio
A virus which passes from one person to another through droplets in the breath or by touch.

Severe muscle spasm followed by paralysis and muscle contractures.

Diagnosed by specific blood tests.
Treatment for Polio
None available other than general physical support and muscle relaxants. An oral (Sabin) vaccine is available that is extremely effective, safe, and has no side effects.
Complications of Polio of its treatment
If the muscles of breathing or the heart are affected, the patient may die or remain on a respirator for life.
Likely Outcome of Polio
Poor. Many patients recover, but most of them have significant disabilities.
