Multiple fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys that are formed when tiny urine-collecting tubes within the kidney become blocked or do not connect up to the main urine-collecting system of the kidney.
Causes of Polycystic Kidney
Familial (inherited).
Symptoms of Polycystic Kidney
Usually no symptoms, and found during investigations of a family that is known to have the disease, during an operation or other routine investigation. In other cases may be a cause of high blood pressure, blood in the urine, or constant pain in one loin.
Tests for Polycystic Kidney
Diagnosed by ultrasound scan, CT scan or special X-rays of the kidney.
Treatment for Polycystic Kidney
Most patients require no treatment. In serious cases where the kidneys do fail, dialysis (artificial kidney machine) or a kidney transplant are possible.

Liver and pancreas may be involved in a small number of patients.

Good. Although damaged, the kidney tissue remaining between the cysts is able to function adequately.
