Causes of Priapism Spinal cord injury, bladder stones, blood diseases (eg. leukaemia in children), stroke, uncontrolled diabetes, some forms of widespread cancer, injury to the penis, excess dose of alprostadil (Caverject, Muse), illegal drugs (eg. cocaine, marijuana) and prescription drugs (eg. prazosin, heparin). Rarely a result of excessive sexual stimulation. |
Symptoms of Priapism Penis remains persistently, inappropriately and painfully erect for a long period of time. |
Tests for Priapism Any underlying cause needs to be excluded by appropriate tests. |
Treatment for Priapism Warm packs, pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) tablets, and syringes to draw excess blood from the penis.
