Causes of Proctalgia Fugax Spasm of the muscle that controls the opening and closing of the anus (the sphincter). Normally this is in constant contraction to prevent the passage of faeces and gas, but if it contracts excessively into a cramp, pain is felt. |
Symptoms of Proctalgia Fugax Severe, brief, very sharp pain that is felt in the anus for a few seconds or minutes several times a day. Patients describe the sensation as having a thin knife pushed into the anal canal and twisted. |
Tests for Proctalgia Fugax None diagnostic. |
Treatment for Proctalgia Fugax Difficult, and involves using ice packs, ice suppositories (large tablets inserted into the anus) and anal injections. Strangely, inhaling salbutamol (Ventolin normally used for asthma) will sometimes ease the pain.
