Inflammation or infection of the anal canal.
Causes of Proctitis
Bacterial, viral (eg. Herpes) or fungal infection, or injury to the anus (eg. homosexual penetration).
Symptoms of Proctitis
Pain and irritation in the anus that is worse with passing faeces, constant feeling that there is a motion to be passed when there is none, and sometimes a discharge.
Tests for Proctitis
Swab taken from the anus to identify responsible infecting organism.
Treatment for Proctitis
Appropriate antibiotic or antifungal creams and antibiotic or antiviral tablets by mouth. Soothing steroid creams and suppositories (anal tablets) may also be used.
Complications of Proctitis of its treatment
Persistent infection may cause scar tissue formation and a narrowing of the anal canal.
Likely Outcome of Proctitis
Depends on cause, but usually good with treatment.
