Medical Questions » Sialitis
Name: Sialitis |
Also known as: Sialadenitis |
Infection or inflammation of one or more of the three salivary glands on each side of the mouth (the parotid, submandibular and submental glands) that supply the saliva to the mouth. If the parotid gland (which is situated at the angle of the jaw and is the largest of the glands) alone is infected the condition is called parotitis. |
Causes of Sialitis May be caused by a stone in the duct of the salivary gland (see salivary stone entry), may be associated with Sjogren syndrome, a tumor, or may start for no apparent reason. |
Symptoms of Sialitis Acutely painful swelling of the gland which may exude pus into the mouth. |
Tests for Sialitis None diagnostic. |
Treatment for Sialitis Potent antibiotics that are often given by an intravenous drip, and massage of the gland to expel any pus.
|
Complications of Sialitis of its treatment If the infection is not adequately treated an abscess may form. |
Likely Outcome of Sialitis Good with appropriate treatment. |
