Snoring
Medical Questions » Snoring
Name: Snoring |
Also known as: |
Noise created at sleeping. |
Causes of Snoring May occur intermittently during colds, flu or throat infections because of the excess production of phlegm and the swelling of tissues, but in persistent cases it is due to the vibration of the soft part at the back of the palate on the roof of the mouth with the movement of air. |
Symptoms of Snoring Harsh rough noise produced by the movement of air in and out of the throat and nose with breathing during sleep. |
Tests for Snoring If severe, may need to be investigated in a sleep laboratory, where the patient can be monitored through an entire night. |
Treatment for Snoring Changing the position during sleep from the back to the side, using pillows or straps if necessary. Patients should lose weight if obese, and stop sedatives, alcohol and smoking. Nose clips and dilating springs may prove successful. Sometimes medications (eg. antidepressants, respiratory stimulants, anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids) may be beneficial. In very severe cases surgery to remove part of the soft palate can allow a clear airway and stop the problem.
|
Complications of Snoring of its treatment Sleep apnea when the breathing stops completely for up to a minute. |
Likely Outcome of Snoring Control eventually possible if patient is prepared to follow a full treatment program. |
