Inflammation of the spine. There are several different types, the most common being rheumatoid spondylitis, ankylosing spondylitis and arthritic spondylitis. |
Causes of Spondylitis Rheumatoid form is caused by a rejection reaction of the body to the tissue lining the small joints of the back (autoimmune condition). Arthritic form is usually a wear and tear injury to a part of the spine in heavy manual workers or those who have participated in rugged sports. |
Symptoms of Spondylitis Significant pain in localized areas of the back bone. |
Tests for Spondylitis Damage may be seen on an X-ray or CT scan. Blood tests show inflammatory changes. |
Treatment for Spondylitis Anti-inflammatory medications, pain killers, physiotherapy (most important), surgery and some exotic drugs for the rheumatic form (eg. chloroquine, gold).
