Medical Questions » Spondylosis
Name: Spondylosis |
Also known as: |
Abnormality of the mechanical structure of the spine. |
Causes of Spondylosis Incorrect alignment of the joints between the vertebral arches (the arch of bone protecting the spinal cord) in the back. Usually occurs in the elderly, obese or after a back injury. If the joints become inflamed, the condition is spondylitis. |
Symptoms of Spondylosis Dull aching pain in the neck or back that is relieved by a change in position. May be associated with a protective spasm of the back muscles. |
Tests for Spondylosis X-rays and CT scans of the back may show arthritic changes in the involved joints. |
Treatment for Spondylosis Exercises and spine movements under the supervision of a physiotherapist, anti-inflammatory medications, support corset or neck brace, pain killers, and in severe cases surgery.
|
Complications of Spondylosis of its treatment May progress to spondylitis. |
Likely Outcome of Spondylosis Often persistent and recurrent, with good temporary response to treatment. Surgery may be curative. |
