Widespread nerve and skin damage from poor diet.
Causes of Strachan Syndrome
Poor nutrition, particularly a lack of vitamin B. Often occurs in alcoholics and with starvation. Worse in smokers.
Symptoms of Strachan Syndrome
Amblyopia (dim vision), dermatitis around mouth and genitals, and painful and excessively sensitive areas of skin. Some patients have muscle weakness or spasms.
Tests for Strachan Syndrome
Abnormalities of the retina (light sensitive area at back of eye) when examined through an ophthalmoscope (magnifying light), blood test abnormalities, and over active reflexes.
Treatment for Strachan Syndrome
Vitamin supplements and good diet.
Complications of Strachan Syndrome of its treatment
Permanent vision damage if left untreated for a prolonged period.
