A miniature abscess in an eyelid. |
Causes of Stye A bacterial infection of one of the tiny sweat or oil glands (glands of Zeiss) on the margin of the eyelid that keep the eyelashes moist and lubricated. Often no apparent reason, but may follow excessively rubbing the eye or an injury to the eyelid. |
Symptoms of Stye Infected gland becomes painful, red, swollen, and fills with pus. |
Tests for Stye None necessary. |
Treatment for Stye Frequent warm compresses to the eye, and antibiotic ointment under the upper eyelid. A persistent sty can be incised to drain away pus.
