Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion
Medical Questions » Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion
Name: Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion |
Also known as: Syndrome of Inappropriate Vasopressin Secretion |
A complex condition in which excess ADH (anti-diuretic hormone or vasopressin) is released by the pituitary gland in the center of the head. ADH controls the rate at which the kidneys produce urine and excrete salt and if excess is produced, the kidneys do not release sufficient water in the urine, and it builds up in the body. |
Causes of Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion May occur as a result of a pituitary gland tumor, strokes in the part of the brain (hypothalamus) which controls* the pituitary gland, or bleeding into the brain from a head injury. Some types of cancer, particularly of the lungs and pancreas, can start producing ADH independent from the pituitary gland. A number of other diseases (eg. tuberculosis, thyroid gland under activity) may rarely also inappropriately produce ADH. Uncommon side effects from drugs and prolonged resuscitation may also trigger the syndrome. |
Symptoms of Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion Weight gain, reduced urine output, generalized weakness, mental confusion, and eventually convulsions due to retention of excessive amounts of water and very low levels of salt in the blood. |
Tests for Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion Blood and urine tests abnormal. |
Treatment for Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion Controlled by medications (diuretics) to make the kidneys produce more urine, taking salt and restricting fluid intake.
|
Complications of Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion of its treatment Heart, brain and other organ damage occur if not controlled. |
Likely Outcome of Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion Good control with treatment, but a cure may be difficult as the exact cause must be found and corrected. Fatal if not controlled. |
