Synovitis

Medical Questions » Synovitis
Name: Synovitis
Also known as:
Inflammation or infection of the synovial membrane which lines all joint cavities, covering all surfaces within the joint except those where weight-bearing cartilage is present. The membrane secretes synovial fluid which acts as a lubricant within joints, and allows them to move smoothly and freely.
Causes of Synovitis
A bacterial infection, injury to the joint, rheumatoid arthritis, tuberculosis (now rare), gonorrhea or other infecting organisms. Usually associated with the excessive secretion of synovial fluid into the joint.
Symptoms of Synovitis
Swelling, restricted movement, pain and sometimes redness and heat in the joint. Any joint may be involved, but the hip, knee and ankle are the most commonly affected ones.
Tests for Synovitis
Sometimes necessary to drain some fluid from the joint through a needle and examine it to diagnose the cause.
Treatment for Synovitis
The cause must be treated (eg. antibiotics for a bacterial infection) and the joint must be rested until pain and swelling subside.
Complications of Synovitis of its treatment
If left untreated, permanent damage to the joint may occur, or arthritis may develop prematurely.
Likely Outcome of Synovitis
Depends on cause, but usually good result from treatment.
