Uncommon inflammation of the aortic arch (very large artery running up from the heart and arching over to run down the back of the chest) and the arteries leading off from this to the neck, head and arms. Tends to occur more in young women, and oriental Asians. |
Causes of Takayasu' s Arteritis Unknown, but probably an autoimmune disease. |
Symptoms of Takayasu' s Arteritis Generalized symptoms of tiredness, fever, night sweats, joint pains, loss of appetite. Specific symptoms include chest pain, high blood pressure, heart enlargement, fainting and vision deterioration. |
Tests for Takayasu' s Arteritis Poor or loss of pulses in the neck and arms. Diagnosis confirmed by arteriography (X-ray of arteries after injection of a dye). |
Treatment for Takayasu' s Arteritis Prednisone (a steroid) eases the symptoms, but does not change the prognosis.

Likely Outcome of Takayasu' s Arteritis Very variable. May settle spontaneously without treatment, or progress rapidly to death in 10%. |
