Medical Questions » Tendonitis
Name: Tendonitis |
Also known as: |
Inflammation of a tendon due to overuse or injury. Tendons connect a muscle to a bone so that when a muscle contracts, the bone is pulled by the tendon. |
Causes of Tendonitis If a tendon becomes strained, stretched, overused or damaged it will become inflamed. Supraspinatus tendinitis is one of the most common types of tendinitis, and is caused by inflammation of the tendon that runs across the top of the shoulder to move the arm away from the body. |
Symptoms of Tendonitis The tendon swells, becomes acutely painful and does not work effectively. |
Tests for Tendonitis Sometimes tiny flecks of bone form in the tendon if it has been inflamed for a long time, and these can be seen on X-ray. |
Treatment for Tendonitis Rest of the affected part, which may be strapped, bandaged, splinted or plastered to ensure there is no movement. Anti-inflammatory medicines and steroid injections may also be used along with physiotherapy, which is particularly valuable on return to work to prevent a recurrence of the problem.
