Tenosynovitis
Medical Questions » Tenosynovitis
Name: Tenosynovitis |
Also known as: |
Inflammation of the fibrous sheath that surrounds a tendon, particularly in the hands and feet. |
Causes of Tenosynovitis Overuse or repetitive use may reduce the volume of the very thin film of lubricating synovial fluid that allows a tendon to slide smoothly through its sheath, triggering inflammation. |
Symptoms of Tenosynovitis Pain with any movement involving use of the inflamed tendon sheath, and tenderness if pressure is applied to the tendon. |
Tests for Tenosynovitis None diagnostic. |
Treatment for Tenosynovitis Resting the affected part by strapping, bandages, splints or even plaster to prevent any movement of the tendon. Anti-inflammatory medicines may also be used along with physiotherapy. In severe cases injections of steroids may be given around the tendon sheath, but these cannot be repeated too frequently. The last resort is an operation to remove the tendon sheath.
|
Complications of Tenosynovitis of its treatment Rarely permanent contractures of the tendon and limited movement of the joint may occur. |
Likely Outcome of Tenosynovitis Generally good. |
