Rare cancerous or benign tumor of the thymus gland, which is a small irregular strip of glandular tissue that lies behind the upper part of the breast bone and extends up into the front of the peck. The thymus is proportionally much larger and more important in children, and reaches its maximum size at puberty. It plays a major role in the development and maintenance of the immune system, produces specific types of white blood cells that are vital in allowing the body to become immune to infection, and secretes a hormone that maintains the cells it produces. |
