Causes of Tumour Lysis Syndrome
Body chemistry (metabolic) disturbance due to rapid release of toxins from inside a large number of cancer cells destroyed by chemotherapy (medication).
Symptoms of Tumour Lysis Syndrome
Weakness, tiredness, paralysis of bowels, constipation, irregular heart beat and acute kidney failure.
Tests for Tumour Lysis Syndrome
Blood tests show significant abnormalities in electrolytes (essential elements).
Treatment for Tumour Lysis Syndrome
Prevented by giving lots of fluids during chemotherapy, and medication to make urine alkaline and remove toxins (eg. allopurinol). Treated in hospital by giving fluids through an intravenous drip and monitoring electrolytes carefully.
Complications of Tumour Lysis Syndrome of its treatment
Death from heart or kidney failure.
Likely Outcome of Tumour Lysis Syndrome
Depends on type of cancer being treated. Syndrome can usually be controlled.
